World Intrigued by Bulgarian Economy

World leaders have shown an increased interest for Bulgaria's economic potential in the light of nearing EU entry, the Bulgarian finance minister revealed. Milen Velchev moderated the opening session of the annual summit of the World Economic Forum on Wednesday. The major event is taking place in the winter resort of Davos, Switzerland. Following Wednesday's discussion, Velchev held several meetings with other foreign ministers as well as with the leaders of prospering international companies, a press release announced. Velchev was given the impression of growing world interest towards Bulgaria's economic affairs, as the country is expected to become a full member of the European Union in 2007. Former US President Bill Clinton, British Prime Minister Tony Blair, South African leader Thabo Mbeki, President Obesanjo of Nigeria as well as Microsoft founder Bill Gates and rock star Bono are among participants in the summit. Combating poverty in Africa was the top priority as the Forum entered its second day on Thursday. Tony Blair appealed for more aid to Africa, and the issue of HIV spread has emerged as a central theme.
